At ILF, corporate sustainability means acting responsibly as a company and creating lasting positive impacts on society, the environment, and the global economy. In pursuit of our vision – A leader in improving quality of life around the globe – we are passionate about improving sustainable living conditions worldwide. This motivates us and reaffirms our commitment to the work we do.
Our approach spans the entire organization, from reducing our ecological footprint and embedding sustainability into our governance structures to strengthening our workplace culture. Central to this effort are raising awareness and providing training for all employees, along with aligning key initiatives—such as our Roadmap to Net Zero and our ambition to be an Employer of Choice—with other actions that collectively shape ILF’s sustainability journey.
Our Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
At ILF, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework that guides both our services and our corporate practices. We support these global goals in two ways: through our core contributions, which create direct and measurable impact through our projects and operations, and through our enabling contributions, which support the achievement of the SDGs indirectly yet systematically.
Our core contributions include areas such as clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, resilient infrastructure, sustainable cities, and climate action — outcomes directly embedded in our engineering services and in the way we manage our ecological footprint.
They also extend to our own operations — for example, ensuring health and safety, fostering diversity and inclusion, supporting employee development, and upholding compliance and ethical business practices.
At the same time, ILF makes enabling contributions by promoting decent work and economic growth, encouraging responsible consumption, expanding education and training, and building partnerships. These efforts support broader sustainability objectives and amplify the positive impacts of our core activities.

We are committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, with a particular focus on reducing our carbon footprint and prioritizing sustainable practices.
Recognizing the urgency of the climate crisis, we have developed a comprehensive roadmap to guide our sustainability efforts. These efforts are underpinned by the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability, which we apply when monitoring and documenting our progress on our sustainability journey in our annual Sustainability Report.
I. OUR ROADMAP TO NET ZERO
At ILF, we recognize the urgency of the climate crisis and our responsibility to take action. In line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we are committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This goal is more than a climate target — it signifies a transformation in our operations, our culture, and the way we use our engineering expertise to deliver sustainable value.
To accomplish this, we have established short-term targets for 2030: reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50% and Scope 3 emissions by 40% compared to our 2022 baseline. By 2040, we plan to reduce total emissions by at least 90%, offsetting no more than 10% of the remaining unavoidable emissions.
Our Net Zero Roadmap is built around four core action areas:
- Cultural Change & Communication – raising awareness and promoting responsibility among all employees
- Infrastructure & Buildings – reducing energy consumption and improving efficiency in our facilities
- Purchasing & Supply Chain – embedding sustainability into procurement and supplier relationships
- Mobility – reducing emissions from commuting and business travel
Through this organized approach, backed by employee engagement and continuous monitoring, ILF is transforming ambition into measurable progress.
II. OUR MEASURES
To implement our Net Zero Roadmap, ILF has identified six Group-wide measures that apply across ILF. Developed through company-specific Net Zero workshops, these measures form the foundation of our efforts to achieve climate neutrality.
- Changing the company culture and communication – raising awareness about the climate crisis, empowering employees through training, and fostering a culture of responsibility and continuous learning.
- Company vehicles – reducing emissions by decarbonizing our fleet and promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions.
- Employee commuting – promoting sustainable commuting through carpooling, incentives for public transportation, company-provided buses, and remote work options.
- Business travel – reducing emissions from air travel by prioritizing virtual meetings, avoiding short-haul flights, and optimizing itineraries.
- Energy use in offices – reducing emissions from electricity, heating, and cooling by increasing efficiency, switching to green energy, and expanding renewable solutions such as photovoltaic systems.
- Conscious consumption of goods – reducing overall consumption, prioritizing sustainable sourcing, collaborating with eco-friendly suppliers, and encouraging circular practices throughout the supply chain.
Together, these measures enable us to systematically reduce emissions, integrate sustainability into our daily operations, and keep ILF on track to achieve our Net Zero 2040 goal.
At ILF, our employer branding strategy is a long-term cultural process rather than a short-term project. Guided by our values of fairness, respect, honesty, and reliability, we aim to create a workplace where individuals can grow, feel valued, and take pride in being part of the ILF family.
Feedback from our employees is essential in guiding this journey. In 2023, ILF was recognized as a Great Place to Work® in 14 countries. The results of this initial survey led to specific improvements, such as enhanced leadership development, new sustainability-focused programs, and upgraded workplace facilities and benefits.
In 2025, nearly 90% of our employees worldwide participated in the second group-wide survey. Thanks to their honest feedback, ILF has now been certified as a Great Place to Work® in 17 offices worldwide. This achievement demonstrates the trust our employees place in us – and motivates us to keep improving.
Our goal of being recognized as an Employer of Choice is an ongoing commitment, which we pursue through the following measures:
- Embracing the ONE ILF DNA – strengthening collaboration and a shared sense of belonging across all ILF companies.
- Pursuing lasting recognition as an Employer of Choice – through continuous improvement and global benchmarking.
- Living our values and culture daily – fairness, respect, honesty, and reliability in all interactions.
- Building sustainability awareness – integrating responsibility for people, the planet, and performance into our workplace culture.
- Supporting flexibility and individual needs – by accommodating hybrid work arrangements whenever possible.
Through these efforts, we continuously strengthen employee engagement, promote diversity, and build long-term trust – making ILF not only a great place to work today but also an Employer of Choice for the future.
Colleagues across ILF offices worldwide actively engage in initiatives that have a positive impact on society and the environment. Selected examples demonstrate the dedication of ILF employees to improving community well-being and protecting the planet.
- Blood donation drives – colleagues in Canada regularly donate blood through Canadian Blood Services, while ILF Austria hosts annual blood drives with the Red Cross.
- Educational support – the Adolf Feizlmayr Foundation, established by one of ILF’s founders, provides university scholarships in Germany and Austria. Our Kazakhstan office sponsors scholarships at three universities, and ILF Austria donates refurbished laptops to students in need.
- Community engagement – colleagues in Poland support a local orphanage, including excursions organized by the Club of Young Engineers. In Canada, teams volunteer at homeless shelters and emergency shelters for families.
- Environmental conservation – employees in Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, and Romania organize tree-planting campaigns, while teams in Saudi Arabia and Canada carry out beach and river clean-ups to help protect biodiversity and public spaces.
Through these initiatives, ILF demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility, strengthens communities, and helps safeguard the environment in which we live and work.
At ILF, transparency guides our sustainability efforts. We publish an annual Sustainability Report in accordance with the GRI Standards (2021) to disclose our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and progress. The report helps us regularly assess our strengths and weaknesses, define medium- and long-term targets, and monitor our progress in improving ILF’s overall sustainability.
Our reporting is based on a multi-stage materiality process involving both internal and external stakeholders.
This process has identified nine ILF-specific material topics that guide our sustainability efforts and disclosures, organized across the three ESG dimensions:
- Environment: Carbon Footprint; Energy Consumption & Efficiency; Wastewater & Waste
- Social: Employment & Working Conditions; Equality, Diversity & Inclusion; Health & Safety; Digitalization
- Governance: Anti-Corruption and Bribery; Legal Compliance
